Water Baptism

Thank you!

Water Baptism

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 2:36-39

STARTING POINT

One of the first biblical responses to salvation is getting water baptized. Jesus himself was baptized (yet never repented because he is sinless) and said that we should be baptized, too.

Matthew 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

COMMITMENT

Baptism isn't just a religious ritual to make ourselves feel better. It's a public confession of a personal commitment. By getting baptized, you are saying to Jesus, yourself and everyone gathered that you have given your life to Jesus and devote yourself to following him for the rest of your life.

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

SYMBOLISM

Baptism is symbolizes two things: when we go down under the water, it symbolizes the death and burial of our old life without Jesus; when we come up out of the water, it symbolizes our resurrection to new life in Jesus.

Romans 6:4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Colossians 2:12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
